Nomination Categories

1. Job Creation

Total jobs created as a consequent of IDC funding. This will be measured as part of overall employees during the IDC funding tenure. Progress on jobs created agreed to as part of the loan agreement (pro rata’d).

2. Localisation

This category is only open to manufacturing companies and will be judged according to the following criteria

  • At least 50% of the manufacturing process is done in SA
  • The product is SABS approval or other registered with bodies that regulate the particular industries
  • Employees – contract of employment or labour relations policy
  • Environment policies

3. Sustainability

  • Has water risk assessment been done for the facility and supply chain?
  • How does the BP manage and monitor its use and impact on the resource?
  • Percentage improvement (reduction) in Greenhouse gas emissions per unit output (external report)
  • Percentage improvement (reduction) in energy usage per unit output (electricity and petrol bills)
  • Percentage reduction in water use per unit output (council statement)
  • Percentage reduction in solid waste per unit output (includes recycling, re-use percentages) {waste content collected by weight or volume}
  • If industrial client, percentage reduction in harmful gas emissions (excludes GHG) {external report}
  • Green Certificate/Qualifications awarded/received? Or Other eg. Biodiversity, Eco-tourism etc (any proof of award)
  • Energy efficiency improvements and savings (statements, audits, etc)
  • Proactive approach to source energy/electricity from renewable resources (any proof available)

For all of the above, the measurement in improvement must be off an established baseline. The baseline cannot be more than 2 years back from the start of the competition period (1 May).

Additionally, Business Partner’s do not need to provide information on all criteria, only those which are applicable.

4. BBBEE

BP’s with a BBBEE level of 3 or higher may enter this category. Please add the Unique Reference number on the BBBEEE certificate.

5. Rural Business

Category is only open to businesses in non-urban areas including townships

Evidence must be provided for job creation, profitability practices.

Provide the last three years audited financial statements.

Special Awards Categories

6. Most Innovative Business

  • Is the entry for a
    • Product or process that is innovative in nature?
    • Does the entry show clear technological innovation?

7. Best Turnaround/Most Improved Business

BP’s must provide five year audited financial statements as evidence supporting improvements of cash flow and profitability; sustainability practices and jobs must not have been undermined or sacrificed in order to achieve the turnaround.

8. Best Exhibition

This category is only open to finalist of the competition.
