Boost for rural Nkonkwana

PRESS RELEASE

20 August  2015

The Industrial Development Corporation (IDC) yesterday handed over a multi-million rand brand new school to the Minister of Basic Education Angie Motshekga in Nkonkwana, just outside Willowvale in the Eastern Cape.

This is part of IDC's social responsibility initiatives to improve infrastructure and the quality of education especially in rural schools across the country.

Speaking at the handover event IDC chief executive Geoffrey Qhena said given the country's skills shortage and high level of unemployment, improving the quality of education was a critical imperative in meeting South Africa's developmental goals.

"We need to invest more in our education system. Resolving the current challenges at schools requires a concerted effort between government the private sector and community," said Qhena.

He said more interventions were needed at all levels - primary, secondary and tertiary – to realise tangible socio-economic impact.

The school has eight classrooms, an administration block, water and sanitation facilities, fully-fitted kitchen and a playfields.

With more than 150 pupils from the surrounding villages attending the Nkonkwana Secondary School, principal Patricia Mhlathi said IDC's intervention would enable the school to improve the quality of learning.

She said: "This is a timely intervention when everyone in community was losing hope. This partnership between government and the IDC has brought back dignity to Nkonkwana."

Mhlathi said the school would also be used for adult education.

Motshekga said Kha ri Gude – a programme run her department to teach adults how to read and write – would also be provided to the community of Nkonkwana.

IDC spent over R20m in the last financial year on improving infrastructure, governance and curriculum support at its 20 adopted schools across the country.
